Golden Bear Civil Engineers Take First Place in Regional Surveying Competition, Headed to Nationals in California

黨Ƶ University’s Civil and Environmental Engineering Department is proud to announce that its student surveying team has earned first place overall at the 2025 ASCE-UESI Northeast Regional Surveying Competition, hosted by the University of Massachusetts Amherst on April 17. This impressive victory marks the team’s first time competing and has earned them the honor of representing the Northeast region at the national competition, which will take place June 27–29 in San Luis Obispo, California.

The ASCE-UESI Surveying Competition emphasizes the foundational role of surveying in civil engineering. Students are challenged to apply core field and office techniques that mirror real-world engineering problems, reinforcing the skills needed to collaborate effectively with surveying professionals during both design and construction phases of a project.

This year’s national competition will include two major components:

Part I: Topographical Mapping Project – Teams will analyze mapping data, create a set of surveying drawings, and deliver a formal presentation.

Part II: Field Surveying Tasks – Students will complete four out of seven practical tasks (chosen by judges):

  • Pacing
  • Navigation with a compass
  • Differential leveling
  • Construction stakeout
  • Finding an inaccessible point
  • Determining proposed sewer depth and cut
  • Calculating area and/or volume

Representing WNE with skill, dedication, and Golden Bear pride, the 2025 Surveying Team includes:

  • Jacob Lyons (Junior, Civil Engineering – Team Captain)
  • Gianna Calabrese, John DaFonseca, Matthew Djokotoe, Elvis Merejo, Gabriela Sliwka (Sophomores, Civil Engineering)
  • Dr. Myungseob (Edward) Kim (Faculty Advisor)

As the team prepares to compete on the national stage, we invite the WNE community and supporters to help them reach their fundraising goal of $9,000. These funds will support travel and participation expenses for the six students and Dr. Kim. Your contribution will not only empower these aspiring engineers to shine at nationals but also support the continued excellence and professional development of WNE’s civil engineering program.

Let’s come together to help our students bring home a national victory and inspire the next generation of engineers!
